Actress Laverne Cox discusses
transitioning in a new video for the I AM: Trans People Speak
campaign.
“I'm an actress. I'm a producer.
I'm a writer. I'm a daughter. I'm a sister. And I'm a transgender
woman,” Cox
says in the 2-minute-30-second video.
“When I started transitioning … I
had this fantasy that I would start taking hormones and in a few
years I would sort of blend in and no one would ever know that I was
trans and I could just live my life, you know, undetected. And I
knew a lot of trans folks like that. And that was sort of presented
as the goal of transitioning. When I realized that I wasn't blending
in effortlessly, I had to sort of reevaluate things for myself and I
had to begin to think about … I had to begin to own this
transgender thing.”
“I had to say, 'Well this is who I
am.'” (The video is embedded on this page. Visit
