Former National Football League (NFL)
Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and his family have donated $50,000 to
the campaign to legalize gay marriage in Maine.
According to the AP, the family –
which includes Tagliabue, his wife, Chandler, their son, Drew, and
his longtime partner – announced the contribution to Mainers United
for Marriage on Tuesday.
“My family cares about Maine and
about the freedom to marry,” Tagliabue said in a statement. “We
felt we had to get off the sidelines and get involved in this
important campaign in a state that we love. Last winter, I spoke at
Bowdoin College and met many young people disturbed by the fact that
their lesbian and gay peers struggle for acceptance. This fight for
marriage equality is something we feel passionately about not just
for our son and his partner, who has been a part of our family for 20
years, but for all loving, committed couples.”
Earlier
this month, Tagliabue and his wife donated $100,000 to the
campaign to uphold a marriage equality law approved by Maryland
lawmakers.
