Sam Champion, the weather anchor of
ABC's Good Morning America, is engaged to marry photographer
Rubem Robierb.
Champion made the announcement to a New
York Times reporter covering the wedding of MSNBC anchor Thomas
Roberts to Patrick Abner.
“We're getting married New Year's Eve
in Miami,” Champion said on the dance floor.
“We'll do it here officially [New
York], and then have a party in Miami,” Robierb
corrected him.
Champion has not previously publicly
discussed his sexual orientation. He is the first co-host of a
network morning television show to come out gay. Champion's sexual
orientation was an open secret in the industry.
According to the Times, Champion
will discuss his upcoming nuptials in a segment on Monday's Good
Morning America.
Champion follows the recent self-outing
of CNN anchor and talk show host Anderson Cooper, who was hounded for
years with rumors he is gay.
Other openly gay television
personalities include CNN anchor Don Lemon, and Thomas Roberts and
Rachel Maddow, both of whom can be seen on cabler MSNBC.
