A married, Catholic couple lauds a lesbian family in the first TV commercial from the campaign to defeat an amendment to the Minnesota Constitution which would limit marriage to heterosexual couples.

In the 30-second ad released Tuesday, John and Kim Canny of Savage are identified as Catholic Republicans married 13 years and raising 3 children. The Cannys say they never gave gay marriage much thought until a lesbian couple with an adopted son moved into their neighborhood.

“They were the most wonderful neighbors,” Kim says in the ad. “It taught all of us in our little suburban world.”

“We did have some good discussions,” John says. “In our daughter's world, her normal is so much different than ours. It didn't faze her at all.”

Kim says, “It's okay to take a second look,” and John adds, “And when you do, vote no.” (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)

Minnesotans United for All Families is airing the spot on six Twin Cities TV stations at a cost of $255,000, the AP reported.
