Actor-director LeVar Burton has joined
the NOH8 Campaign, which raises awareness and funds for gay rights
causes, including ending California's 2008 voter-approved gay
marriage ban, Proposition 8.
Burton first came to prominence playing
Kunta Kinte in the ABC miniseries Roots. He is best known for
his portrayal of Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: The
Next Generation.
The campaign's Adam Bouska and his
partner Jeff Parshley photograph celebrities, politicians,
professional athletes and everyday folks with their mouths duct taped
and the campaign's familiar “NOH8” slogan often written on one
cheek.
In his photograph, the 55-year-old
Burton is wearing a white t-shirt and his eyes are duct taped, a
reference to his Star Trek character who is blind and wore a
VISOR, which provided him with a sense of sight.
Recent celebrities who have joined the
NOH8 Campaign include singer LeAnn
Rimes, actor Taye
Diggs, actor James
Van Der Beek, actress Aisha
Tyler, Glee's Nene
Leakes, singer Miley
Cyrus, Hot in Cleveland's Valerie
Bertinelli, Wendie Malick and Jane Leeves, singer Courtney
Love and Meghan
and Cindy McCain.
