Meg Liffick and Joe Ball of
Indianapolis gave gay and lesbian couples at their wedding last
weekend the first dance.
New York Times bestselling
author John Green (The Fault of Our Stars, Looking for Alaska,
Paper Towns and An
Abundance of Katherines) wrote a post on his blog about the
wedding.
Green said that when it came time for
the traditional first dance, Ball read a short statement explaining
that the couple wanted their gay friends who could not marry in
Indiana the privilege of the first dance.
“This was a large and very diverse
wedding in a state that doesn't even recognize same-sex civil unions,
let alone marriage. And yet the ovation that these people received
while dancing to The Beach Boys' Wouldn't It Be Nice was like
nothing I've ever heard at any wedding,” Green wrote. “If there
were dry eyes, I didn't see any.”
“Change is coming,” he
added.
