In their speeches to delegates at the
Republican National Convention, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan touched on
gay marriage.
Ryan touted Romney's opposition to gay
nuptials in listing his qualifications to be the next president.
“Mitt and I also go to different
churches. But in any church the best kind of preaching is done by
example. And I've been watching that example. The man who'll accept
your nomination tomorrow is prayerful, and faithful and honorable.
Not only a defender of marriage, he offers an example of marriage at
its best,” Ryan said.
In accepting the nomination Thursday
night, Romney also reminded Republicans of his stance on social
issues.
“As president, I will protect the
sanctity of life. I will honor the institution of marriage. And I
will guarantee America's first liberty: the freedom of religion,”
Romney said. “President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise
of the oceans and heal the planet. My promise … is to help you and
your family.”
Romney was among the Republican
candidates who last summer signed a
National Organization for Marriage (NOM) pledge in support of a
federal constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
