Olivia Newton-John has said she
supports gay marriage because “love is love.”
In January, Newton-John was among the
celebrities to endorse an effort to legalize such unions in her
native Australia. Also signing on to the endorsement were actor Hugh
Jackman, Wallaby's captain David Pocock, film critics David Stratton
and Margaret Pomeranz and costume designer Lizzy Gardiner.
In an interview before giving a
performance at Chicago's recent Market Days street fair, Newton-John
explained her reasons for supporting marriage for gay and lesbian
couples.
“To me love is love. It shouldn't
matter. I have so many close friends and family who are gay I don't
even think about it,” she
told ChicagoPride.com.
“I just want everyone to have the
chance to love who they want to and it just shouldn't matter. Some
of the closest people in my life are gay and I have to say, have had
longer committed relationships than many of my straight friends –
including my beautiful sister Sarah and her partner.”
