A Democratic Party platform draft
includes support for gay marriage and transgender workplace
protections.
Meeting last month in Minneapolis, the
platform drafting committee unanimously approved the language. The
full committee will gather in Detroit this weekend to finalize the
platform.
Democrats meeting in Charlotte on
September 3 will vote on the platform.
According to the AP, the draft says the
party supports “the movement to secure equal treatment under law
for same-sex couples.”
In 2008, the platform remained quiet on
gay nuptials, though it called for repeal of the Defense of Marriage
Act (DOMA), which bans such unions. And it supported passage of a
“comprehensive” Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which
was understood to mean support for banning workplace discrimination
on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Chris Geidner reported on Friday that the 2012 platform includes
support for transgender workplace protections.
“We support the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act because people should not be fired based on
their sexual orientation or gender identity,” the platform draft
states.
