Activists lobbying for the legalization
of gay marriage in Italy have launched the Share the Love
campaign.
In a 60-second video for the campaign
released last week, a straight couple says, “We can get married,”
followed by a gay man saying: “I can't.” (The video is embedded

Organizers of Condividilove
(which roughly translates to Share the Love) say that a
grassroots effort is needed in Italy because unlike other nations
such as Spain, France and Britain, Italian politicians remain
adamantly apposed to marriage equality.
“Because in a country such as Italy,
we cannot expect our political leaders to ask their people to have
the courage to support the changes that are necessary to heal the
inequality still present in the law,” the group said on
its website. “We are not only referring to socialist premiers
such as Zapatero or Hollande, but also conservative figures such as
British prime minister Cameron, who recently declared: 'Marriage is
something I feel passionately about and I think if it's good enough
for straight people like me, it's good enough for everybody and
that's why we should have gay marriage and we will legislate for
it.'”
“In a country such as Italy, change
has no famous endorsers. It has to come from us, with all the means
we possess. The first one is sharing, today more than ever.”
