Actor Ed Helms says he's through with
Chick-Fil-A after its president conceded the company is opposed to
gay marriage.
Helms, who is best known for playing
Andy Bernard in the NBC sitcom The Office and Dr. Stu Price in
The Hangover films, declared his boycott in a tweet.
“Chick-Fil-A doesn't like gay people?
So lame. Hate to think what they do to the gay chickens! Lost a
loyal fan,” Helms, 38, messaged to his more than 373,000 followers
on Wednesday.
Chick-Fil-A President Dan Cathy on
Monday told the Baptist Press that his company was “guilty
as charged” of supporting groups opposed to gay rights.
In an interview on the Ken Coleman
Show, Cathy defended that support.
“I think we are inviting God's
judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, 'We
know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,'” Cathy
said. “And I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a
prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to
define what marriage is about.”
Chick-Fil-A donated $3 million to
groups opposed to gay rights, including the Family Research Council
(FRC) and Exodus International, between 2003 and 2009. In 2010, the
company gave more than $1.9 million to such groups, more than any
other year for which public records are available, according to
Equality
Matters.
