Chris Hughes, a co-founder of Facebook,
and Sean Eldridge married Saturday in New York.
According to The
New York Times, Hughes and Eldridge were married at their
home in Garrison. The ceremony was officiated by William J. Corbett,
a retired village justice of Floral Park.
The 28-year-old Hughes founded Facebook
with Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz and Eduardo Saverin. He is
the publisher and editor in chief of The New Republic
magazine. Eldridge, 25, founded the Garrison-based Protect Our
Democracy, which advocates for campaign finance reform, and is the
president of Hudson River Ventures, an investment firm. He
previously served as the political director of Freedom to Marry, the
nation's largest advocacy group seeking the legalization of gay
marriage.
The couple met in 2005.
“He was very intelligent and
charismatic,” Hughes said. “He was very kind and politically
engaged, and he cared about the world around us. All of that was
very attractive to me.”
“I think we shared a lot of
important, common interests,” Eldridge said. “We have a love of
philosophy, politics and literature. He was one of the most
intelligent and ambitious people I had ever met.”
The couple became engaged on December
31, 2010 – New Year's Eve – before New York legalized gay
nuptials.
“We were in Thailand in a hotel room
in the north. We were delayed after two days in the snowstorm and
Chris got down on one knee and proposed. It was very traditional and
very sweet,” Eldridge told the New York Post's Page Six.
