The Republican Party of Texas approved
a platform at their state convention in Fort Worth earlier this month
which opposes gay rights.
ThinkProgress.com
reported that the platform is “rife with conservative atrocities,
and there is no shortage of animus-driven anti-gay planks.”
The document affirms the group's
opposition to gay marriage and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act
(ENDA), a proposed federal law which would outlaw workplace
discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
“We oppose this act [ENDA] through
which the federal government would coerce religious business owners
and employees to violate their own beliefs and principles by
affirming what they consider to be sinful and sexually immoral
behavior,” the platform
states.
“We support the definition of
marriage as a God-ordained, legal and moral commitment only between a
natural man and a natural woman, which is the foundational unit of a
healthy society, and we oppose the assault on marriage by judicial
activists.”
ThinkProgress.org's Zack Ford noted
that “the choice to emphasize 'natural man' and 'natural woman' is
likely an attack on transgender people.”
Under a section titled Homosexuality,
the organization claims that “the practice of homosexuality tears
at the fabric of society and contributes to the breakdown of the
family unit.”
“Homosexuality must not be presented
as an acceptable 'alternative' lifestyle, in public policy, nor
should 'family' be redefined to include homosexuals 'couples.'”
