President Barack Obama isn't making any
bones about it: He likes Gay Pride.
Obama kicked off the festivities by
proclaiming June Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride month.
“I call upon the people of the United
States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate
the great diversity of the American people,” Obama
said in a written proclamation.
He also recorded a video in which he
mentioned the contributions of gay activists such as Jean Manford and
Harvey Milk. “But we also remember the unsung heroes,” Obama
said. “The millions of LGBT Americans for whom everyday acts
required extraordinary courage.”
Later in the month, he held his third
annual Gay Pride reception at the White House, at which he told a
crowd of roughly 500 that he and First Lady Michelle Obama had made
up their minds on gay marriage.
In the weeks since, he's sprinkled his
tumblr blog with several Gay Pride items, including a PRIDE magazine
cover featuring the president's image painted in rainbow colors.
On Sunday, two posts appeared.
“Get your stickers and your
suspenders out: Pride events are happening all over the country
today,” said one post.
The second post included a photo of
Obama campaign volunteers at a Gay Pride event along with the
caption: “How bout them rainbows? (thanks, Lizzie)”
