State Democratic parties in Texas,
Montana and Pennsylvania are supporting gay marriage in their 2012
platforms.
Pennsylvania Democrats over the weekend
endorsed a gay marriage resolution sponsored by Adams County
Democratic Chair Roger Lund, who is openly gay.
Politicspa.com
reported that the voice vote was overwhelmingly (85 to 90%) in favor.
The move comes less than 3 weeks after
Jo Ann Nardelli, a former Democratic state committeewoman, defected
from the party over President Barack Obama's endorsement of such
unions.
At their state convention in Houston
over the weekend, Texas Democrats also approved a marriage equality
plank.
“Texas Democrats join President
Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in calling for and
affirming equal rights including marriage equality for all Americas,”
a portion of the resolution states. “We, along with our President
and Vice President, recognize that same sex marriages should be valid
and legal in America. … We support the repeal of the Federal
Defense of Marriage Act, the Texas Defense of Marriage Act and the
Texas Constitutional Marriage Amendment and oppose other attempts to
deny the freedom to marry to loving same sex couples.”
According to QSanAntonio.com,
Erin Moore, outgoing Vice Chair of Texas Stonewall Democratic Caucus,
proved instrumental in getting the resolution to the convention.
Montana Democrats unanimously adopted a
resolution which calls for repeal of the state's constitutional ban
on gay marriage, the Independent
Record reported.
Members moved to remove existing
language supporting civil unions for gay couples and replaced it with
marriage. “We support repealing Section 7, Article 13 of the
Montana Constitution. All adults should have the right to legally
marry another adult of their choice, regardless of sex or gender. We
believe same-sex spouses should have the same legal benefits,
protections and responsibilities granted to all those who marry,”
the resolution states.
