Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank would
like to marry boyfriend Jim Ready twice.
Frank and Ready are set to exchange
vows next month in Massachusetts, the first state to legalize gay
marriage in 2004. But the congressman told a crowd in Portland,
Maine that they are looking forward to a do over next year in Ready's
home state of Maine.
Maine voters will decide this fall on a
first in the nation ballot box question which would legalize gay
marriage in the state. Previous referendums in other states have
mostly asked voters to approve – or reject – constitutional
amendments banning gay marriage.
“We want marriage equality not just
for all LGBT people, but for ourselves,” Frank said Saturday, the
Daily News reported. “We want to get married in
Massachusetts this year, but we want to get married next year in
Frank was in Maine to accept an honor
at the Maine People's Alliance 30th anniversary Rising
Tide awards dinner. He was also the keynote speaker.
Frank came out gay 25 years ago.
