New York City Council Speaker Christine
Quinn and her longtime partner, lawyer Kim Catullo, tied the knot on
Saturday.
The ceremony, held in Chelsea, was
attended by some of the biggest names in New York politics, including
Governor Andrew Cuomo, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
Judith Kaye, New York's former chief
judge, officiated over the wedding.
“It's a historic moment in history
that we are all celebrating now,” Gillibrand told NY1.
“And our job is to make sure that we have equality for all, that
every loving couple in America can celebrate publicly with the person
that they love, with their family around them and with the blessing
of their state.”
Cuomo, Bloomberg and Quinn strongly
supported passage of New York's gay marriage law last year.
“When they attributed their marriage
to New York law, there was a great round of applause, for the very
special law that was passed that enabled this,” Congresswoman
Carolyn Maloney told NY1.
Quinn is the presumed Democratic
candidate for New York City mayor. If elected next year, she would
become the city's first openly gay mayor. And the first legally
married, openly gay politician to lead a major U.S. city.
