Singer Ricky Martin will host a
fundraising event for President Obama's re-election campaign on
Monday in New York City.
Martin discussed the event during an
appearance on Spanish language cabler Univision's Primer Impacto.
“I am proud to support our
president,” said Martin. “I believe Barack Obama has shown a
deep conviction to help those most in need, even if their voices are
not always the ones heard the loudest in Washington. He has also
been an exceptionally strong advocate for the Latino and LGBT
communities, leading us to precedent-setting milestones such as the
appointment of the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice and the
repeal of DADT.”
Martin added that he believes “the
president has put the United States back on the right track and has
earned the opportunity to finish the critical work that he has
started.”
The fundraiser is the first joint event
for the Obama for America LGBT Leadership Council and the Futuro Fund
and takes place at the Rubin Museum of Art. Tickets begin at $5,000
and reach $35,800.
Martin currently co-stars in the
Broadway revival of Evita.
