Mike Huckabee, Tony Perkins Call Dan Savage An Anti-Christian Bully

Mike Huckabee and Tony Perkins have joined the chorus of conservatives condemning Dan Savage for calling “bullshit” on the Bible's anti-gay message.

Savage is the editor of Seattle's The Stranger, the founder of the It Gets Better Project and a Rick Santorum antagonist.

Last month, a group of Christian students staged a walk out as Savage spoke at a high school conference.

“We can learn to ignore the bullshit about gay people in the Bible the same way we have learned to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about shellfish, about slavery, about dinner, about farming, about menstruation, about virginity, about masturbation. We ignore bullshit in the Bible about all sorts of things. The Bible is a radically pro-slavery document. Slave owners waived Bibles over their heads during the civil war and justified it.”

“If the Bible got the easiest moral question that humanity has ever faced wrong, slavery, what are the odds that the Bible got something as complicated as human sexuality wrong? 100 percent,” he said.

Savage later apologized for calling the protesters “pansy-ass” and explained that he was not criticizing Christianity but hypocrisy.

Nevertheless, social conservatives have lined up to condemn Savage.

“Dan Savage seems to think that it's okay to bully a Christian kid,” Huckabee, a former governor of Arkansas, said on the Monday edition of The Mike Huckabee Show.

Perkins, the president of the Christian conservative Family Research Council, agreed and went on to suggest that President Obama had given Savage free reign to bully Christian kids.

“President Obama by embracing this so-called anti-bullying campaign It Gets Better, that Dan Savage is the brainchild of. The president has really anointed Dan Savage an apostle of the vision and intolerance and ... that's opened the doors into these schools and these campuses to take this message. And as you pointed out, I think what he's doing by his own behavior is giving kids a living example of what bullying and intolerance really looks like.” (Listen to entire segment at EqualityMatters.org.)
