The North Carolina chapter of the
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
has released two radio spots urging voters to reject a proposed
constitutional amendment which would ban gay marriage, as well as
civil unions and domestic partnerships for gay couples.
Voters will decide on Amendment One on
May 8.
“The polls and the politicians are
asking the wrong questions on this discriminatory amendment, hatched
in the backrooms of the extremist, rightwing think-tanks,” Rev. Dr.
William J. Barber II, president of the civil rights group, said in a
statement. “Our message is consistent: A vote on the same sex
marriage amendment has nothing to do with your personal and religious
opinion on same sex marriage but everything to do with whether or not
you believe discrimination should be codified and legalized
constitutionally. We should never seek to codify or vote
discrimination into the very heart and frameworks of our
Constitution.”
In addition to the radio ads, the NAACP
is rolling out an aggressive campaign which includes mailers and
robocalls to tens of thousands of North Carolina voters. (The audio
