The campaign to reelect President
Barack Obama and senior White House officials are keeping quiet on
whether he supports an effort to add gay marriage to the 2012
Democratic Party platform.
During an appearance Sunday on ABC's
This Week, White House senior adviser David Plouffe declined
to comment on the issue.
“We don't even have a platform
committee,” Plouffe said. “We are going to work through the
platform process.”
Earlier this month, Obama campaign
manager Jim Messina gave reporters during a conference call a similar
non-response.
“Look, we're a big tent party here,”
Messina said. “POTUS has a great record on fighting for
fundamental fairness for all Americans. You know, 'Don't Ask, Don't
Tell,' and many other accomplishments we are very, very proud of.
You know, there's a process – there's not even a delegate platform
committee yet – there's a process to go through this discussion,
and the DNC will go through that, and we will have a platform.”
The effort has won the endorsement of
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, House Minority Leader Nancy
Pelosi and 22 Democratic senators. Villaraigosa has also been named
the chairman of the Democratic National Convention.
