Six Congressional Democrats who
represent the City of New York have reached out to troubled gay teens
in an It Gets Better video.
The It
Gets Better Project encourages bullied LGBT teens considering
suicide to hang in there, because life eventually gets better.
Congressman Jerry Nadler, who
represents portions of Manhattan and Brooklyn, is the first to appear
in the nearly six-minute video.
“Ever since the Stonewall
demonstration of 1969 our country has made great strides in LGBT
equality,” Nadler says in the video. “It was only a decade ago
when no gay or lesbian couple could marry legally. Today, thousands
of couples are happily wed, gay and lesbian soldiers can now serve
openly in the military, and many states have banned discrimination
based on sexual orientation and gender identity.”
“If you are being bullied or are
having trouble at school or at home, it may seem hard to believe that
you will personally experience this kind of progress in your
lifetime. But it does get better and you're not alone.”
Also appearing in the video are
Representatives Ed Towns of Brooklyn, Eliot Engel of The Bronx,
Carolyn Maloney of Manhattan and Queens, Joseph Crowley of The Bronx
and Queens and Jose Serrano of The Bronx. (The video is embedded in
