Ron Paul on Tuesday was hit with a glitter protest as he made his way off the stage following a rally at the Minneapolis convention center, The Huffington Post reported.

“Housing and healthcare are human rights not privileges,” Glitterati member “Charlie McAwesome” shouted while showering the candidate with glitter. (The video is embedded in the right panel of this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)

While Paul has said he does not support a federal amendment banning gay marriage and he voted in favor of repeal of “Don't Ask, Don't Tell,” he has come under heavy criticism for racist and homophobic writings in newsletters he published in the 1980s and 90s.

GOP presidential rivals Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney have also been targeted with glitter protests in recent days while campaigning in Minnesota. And a member of the Glitterati heckled Newt Gingrich over his opposition to gay rights.

“Tonight we sent a clear message to politicians everywhere that we will not be silent while our communities are under attack,” said Ben Egerman, who led the glitter protest against Santorum. “Those who seek to label our harmless actions as 'assault' should consider the real violence faced by LGBT people and the assaults on our humanity perpetrated every day by politicians like Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich.”
