The American Foundation for Equal
Rights (AFER) has scheduled four events on Tuesday to discuss an
expected ruling on Proposition 8, California's gay marriage ban.
AFER was founded to challenge the
constitutionality of Proposition 8.
A 10:30AM press conference in Los
Angeles will feature co-counsel Theodore B. Olson, AFER Board
President Chad Griffin, and plaintiffs Kris Perry & partner Sandy
Stier and Paul Katami and partner Dominick Zarrillo.
The long-awaited decision by the Ninth
Circuit Court of Appeals is expected to be made public at 10AM.
Proposition 8 was narrowly approved by
California voters in November 2008. The amendment overruled a
California Supreme Court ruling that legalized gay marriage in the
state.
After now retired U.S. District Judge
Vaughn R. Walker declared the law unconstitutional in 2010,
proponents of the amendment appealed the ruling.
Today's decision is expected to be
appealed to the United States Supreme Court.
AFER will hold a national media
conference with co-counsel Theodore B. Olson and David Boies at
11:45AM.
At a 5PM press conference at The Julia
Morgan Ballroom in San Francisco, San Francisco City Attorney Dennis
Herrera will join AFER members.
And AFER founding board members Dustin
Lance Black and Rob Reiner will participate in a 5PM community
gathering at the Los Angeles City Hall Rotunda. Also attending will
be Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and representatives from
The Courage Campaign, Equality California, Equal Roots Coalition,
FAIR, Freedom to Marry, Jordan/Rustin Coalition, L.A. Gay &
Lesbian Center, Latino Equality Alliance, Marriage Equality USA and
others.
