Miley Cyrus' criticism of Rick
Santorum's opposition to gay marriage has been named one of the top
celebrity politics moments of 2011.
“Washington likes to criticize
Hollywood for spreading violence and immorality. Hollywood likes to
return the fire. Here's a look at some memorable instances of
celebrities getting political in 2011,” POLITICO.com
editors wrote in compiling their list.
Referring to Santorum's 2003 remarks in
which he likened gay unions to “man on dog,” the 19-year-old
Cyrus tweeted to her more than 1 million followers in May that Urban
Outfitters had donated to Santorum's previous campaigns. “'IF WE
ALLOW GAY MARRIAGE NEXT THING U KNOW PEOPLE WILL BE MARRYING GOLD
FISH' – Rick Santorum UO contributed $13,000 to this mans
campaign.”
When messaged back, “@MileyCyrus what
happened to that Christian girl from TN with descent moral values and
a lot of heart?” the teen pop sensation responded, “what an
ignorant statement. I don't have 'alot of heart' cuz im not gonna be
a closed minded hypocrite? LOVE IS LOVE. GOD IS LOVE.”
During an appearance on the Chris
Stigall Show, the former Pennsylvania senator feigned concern
over Cyrus' opinion: "When she came out against me, we actually
had a family meeting and decided whether I can continue on in this
process and, you know, we had to talk to the kids and it was
difficult. But we’re actually holding out -- we still think we
might get Lindsay Lohan. And with that, you know, we can continue.
We’re waiting."
“You lost the Hannah Montana vote but
you're hoping to pick up the Mean Girls vote,” Stigall
joked.
