Newt Gingrich's lesbian half-sister
Candace Gingrich-Jones has told Rachel Maddow that she'll vote for
President Barack Obama in 2012.
Gingrich-Jones, who works for the Human
Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation's largest gay rights advocate,
appeared Wednesday on MSNBC's The
Rachel Maddow Show.
This week, Texas Governor Rick
Perry's campaign went decidedly anti-gay in a last-minute shift designed to win over Iowa evangelicals.
When Maddow asked Gingrich-Jones if she
thought Gingrich would follow, she said it wouldn't surprise her.
“I wouldn't put it past any of the
GOP presidential candidates. It's historically been one of the
things – a tactic – that's used,” she said.
On Gingrich's opposition to gay rights:
“I think that if he is a politician and saying these things
because he's a politician but he doesn't believe them, or if he does
believe them, I don't know if I like either of those answers very
much. I know that at the end of the day, he's wrong.”
And Gingrich-Jones added that her
half-brother is not counting on her support.
“I don't think he has any
misconception that I might be” supporting his candidacy, she said.
